Events with a sustainability focus occur year-round. If you have an event idea or wish to collaborate, please email sustainability@charlotte.edu. The most concentrated and coordinated periods are celebrations of Campus Sustainability Month (October) and Earth Month (April).

Lime Ride Prize Patrol
Date: Sunday, Aug 18, 5pm – 6:30pm
Location: Lot 18 near Elm Hall
Take an organized ride on a Lime e-bike and e-scooter and see campus from a totally new perspective. Stop along the way at designated places along the route for prizes and beverages. Space is limited. Registration required.
Nature Therapy Walk
Date: Saturday, Sept 7, 9am – 12pm
Location: Van Landingham Glen, UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens
Join Jennifer Bueno-Hutchens, certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide, for a 2.5-3 hour stroll through the forest at Van Landinghma Glen. Through a series of invitations, you will have an opportunity to focus on being present in the moment, deepening your connection with nature and community, and enjoying the many gifts nature has to offer.

Gratitude in the Gardens
Date: Sunday, Sept 1, 3pm – 5pm
Location: Van Landingham Glen, UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens
Join Jennifer Bueno-Hutchens, certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide, for a silent, meditative walk through the Van Landingham Glen. These forest strolls will include meditative prompts around the practice of gratitude. Sessions may include meditative art materials as well.

Learn about the diverse modes of transportation available to you as a UNC Charlotte student, faculty, or staff member, and questions surrounding the safety, accessibility, affordability, and sustainability of transportation on campus and in the Charlotte region.

Zero Waste Football Sorting Days
Date: Sunday, Sept 1st 9am – 12pm; Friday, Nov 1st 9am – 12pm; Sunday, Nov 17th 10am – 1pm
Location: Jerry Richardson Stadium between Gates 3 and 4 (Mac Everett Way N, Charlotte, NC).
Help keep Jerry Richardson football stadium a zero-waste facility! As a Zero Waste volunteer, you will work with university staff to sort items the day after the game into compost, recycling, and trash to divert as much waste from the landfill as possible. Volunteers will be given a free Zero-Waste t-shirt, gloves, and refreshments and should plan to wear weather-appropriate clothes that can get dirty, closed-toed shoes, and bring a reusable water bottle.
We encourage student organizations and groups to volunteer together for these sorting days, but individual volunteers are also welcome. Please indicate your organization affiliation when registering for each event. Direct questions to zerowastecrew@charlotte.edu.

Student Gathering
Event Date: October 16
We enjoyed an evening of learning, collaboration, and fall fun hosted by the Charlotte Green Initiative! The event included opportunities to learn about the student green fund, the types of projects that CGI supports, and collaborate on CGI project proposals in support of Sustainability Month, along with pumpkin painting, pizza, and a Halloween costume contest!
Student Sustainability Summit
Event Date: November 4
On November 4th, we explored the question, “What Does it Take?” to create a more sustainable world. Student organizations and other passionate groups shared their insights, engaged in discussion, and motivated on another around the topics of Sustainability, Education, and Society.
King Week: Breaking Boundaries Film Festival
Date: Tues. January 16, 5:30 – 8:30pm
Location: Popp Martin Student Union Theater
This Niner Nation King Week event highlighted Dr. King’s focus on environmental justice in the South. A series of educational short films focused on efforts and challenges to achieving environmental justice in Alabama communities – a state heavily tied to Dr. King’s legacy. These films were provided by Southern Exposure, a film fellowship program raising awareness of Alabama’s natural resources and the wide-reaching and often disproportionate impacts of environmental issues on communities. A panel of UNC Charlotte students and faculty also shared their perspectives to encourage audience discussion.
King Week: TLC for the Student Gardens

Location: UNC Charlotte Student Gardens, near Storrs and Robinson Halls
This Niner Nation King Week event provided volunteers, alongside University staff and faculty, an opportunity to rejuvenate the Student Gardens that provide students with food for the Jamil Niner Student Pantry and plants for botany research and art classes.
